Sonia Carrasco’s new FW23 collection takes an inspired approach to expressing women’s sexuality. The new collection allows women to show off their sexuality in a way that we want to, not in a way men want us to. Carrasco tries to stray away from the male gaze in fashion by focusing on women’s sexuality from a woman’s perspective. Carrasco is able to specialize the pieces for a woman’s body with excess fabric, layering, and stitching. She uses the curve, piece over piece, and oversized fitted techniques in her designs. With the oversized fitted technique, oversized pieces are stitched snugly to the body to create a tight garment that can show off a woman’s figure if they choose. The unique silhouettes within this collection inspire choice in showing off one’s body.
While supporting women’s sexuality, Carrasco also supports the environment with this new collection. By teaming up with LVMH, Carrasco was able to use upcycled fabrics from LVMH houses for her collection. The brand is devoted to not harming the environment and doing its part to be sustainable in the fashion world.
All of Carrasco’s fabrics are upcycled, recycled, regenerated, or organic, to try and eliminate harmful fabrics. The neutral tones in the collection highlight the importance of helping the environment by connecting the pieces to nature with browns, tans, and oranges. This collection, along with the rest of Carrasco’s work expresses the importance of reclaiming what is important: expressing women’s sexuality and protecting the environment.
