Last time we caught up with DIIV was in Paris back in 2016 following their album “Is the Is Are”. It seemed quiet for a bit, but they were already busy working on new material and now their 3rd album “Deceiver” is dropping on Captured Tracks.
The rebirth takes place when everything collapses. DIIV – Zachary Cole Smith (voice, guitar), Andrew Belay (guitar), Colin Caulfield (bass) and Ben Newman (drums) – created the soundtrack of a personal resurrection under the heavy weight of a metal catharsis, supported by robust guitars and almost brittle vocal tension.
The threatening bass line and the frantic pace of their song Blankeship evolves into schizophrenic curvatures, with vitriolic words that invite an inspection of the title.
The video is the first of the group in six years and was shot in California (Trona Pinnacles, Sequoia National Park and Los Angeles) by Sean Stout (Deafheaven, Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe).
‘Deceiver’ was recorded in March 2019 in Los Angeles. For the first time, the group turned to an outside producer: Sonny Diperri (My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Protomartyr), whose presence has significantly expanded their sound palette, making it richer than ever.
