A couple of years ago we got our first taste of Georgian designers in Paris when several new talents teamed up to stage Art Georgia along with several designers from former Soviet states. Names started circulate around Paris, and designers started to appear in international editorials. Word of mouth among stylists, buyers and journalists was that Tbilisi was buzzing with young talent. We finally made our way over to Tbilisi, dubbed the “Next Berlin”, and it was a real hidden gem of homegrown talent from artists, DJs, interior designers to fashion designers.
Opening up Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi, Georgian born designer David Koma along with musician Eliot Sumner flew into the capital to present the MBFW SS17 new campaign while point to Georgia trending.
While the country has deep historical and cultural roots, it is also defining their aesthetic to the rest of the world, and aesthetic that is dark while not afraid of prints and colors; youthful, yet refined. While the industry may look at Paris, London, Milan, and New York; Tbilisi has always been strategic in West meets Easts dating back to the Silk Route and this generation is making a strategic stride once again. Eyes on you Georgia!
